How Former Dictator Daniel arap Moi and his cronies looted Kenyan economy

During his 24 years of dictatorship from 1978 to December 2002 when his regime was defeated by the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc), former dictator Daniel arap Moi and his cronies looted billions of Kenyans shillings. By the time KANU was defeated in December 2002, the Kenya economy was regularly described as having been “on its knees” by many commentators. Millions of Kenyans were condemned to lives of great poverty and deprivation as the ruling elite under the Kenyan African National Union (KANU) basically emptied public coffers. Between 1990 and December 2002 when Moi’s dictatorship was ended, Ksh 300 billion had been looted from government coffers. Moi had himself amassed a fortune of US$ 3 billion, money that the dictator is reported to have stashed away in foreign Bank accounts. Despite this open theft, the new Narc government has declared that the former dictator is clean. For the Narc ruling class, it is a question of protecting a comrade in need. The list below originated from Transparency International and it is being reproduced here for documentation purposes.
